Empirical Formulas and Percentage Composition

In this exercise, you will be given percent composition for each of the elements in a compound. You should determine the Empirical Formula from these data and enter it in the fields provided.
  • Determine the number of moles of each element by dividing the percentage by the molar mass.
  • Examine the number of moles for each element and then divide each of them by the smallest value
  • If the results for all elements are approximately integers, use these to construct the empirical formula.
  • If the results for all elements are not integers, then multiply all of them by a factor to make them integers and construct the empirical formula.
  • If a coefficient is 'one', enter the number '1' in the appropriate field.
